I ordered the Beef Bibimbap and it was quite good. When I left, I left very satisfied but as I sit writing this post, I realise it was not brilliant.
Unfortunately the Maylands restaurant does not offer Dolsotbobimbap (in a stone bowl), only Bibimbap in a normal bowl. Part of the joy of Bibimbap is scooping out the crunchy rice that has stuck to the hot bowl.
The first thing I noticed was the addition of lettuce. I've eaten a lot of Bibimbap in my day and can't recall any ever having lettuce. The temperature of the meal was the next thing I noticed, it was lukewarm which doesn't happen when the dish is served in a hot stone bowl. The mushrooms and pickled cucumber were delicious and really made the dish, the rice was well cooked and there was a generous portion of marinated beef (albeit a little dry). It was a tasty meal and I enjoyed it but I wouldn't rave about it.
Would I return?
Yes - Eki Bento is local to me. I'm not sure I would recommend travelling to especially to dine at Eki Bento but if you're in the area, it's worth a try. The food was good, but not great.
Tip: if you order the Bibimbap and ask for no lettuce and extra warm/hot.
