Our accommodation was a two minute walk away from The Joinery. As I was only in town for a long weekend, I didn't get to try many of the local cafes but I am so glad that I visited The Joinery.
Located in Elwood, The Joinery is an small open kitchen cafe with solid wood furniture. If we were on 'Sex and the City', I think Natasha ('the idiot stick figure with no soul') would call it 'repressive'. Quite the contrary, with lots of natural light The Joinery felt a bit like a country cafe with its sensible hard wearing furniture with an urban hip twist. We chose The Joinery as my Mum, who had been in the area for a few days, said there were a lot of gluten free options (which there were).
I ordered the Avocado Smash on gluten free toast and a soy chai latte. (I later tweeted and posted on my Facebook page, "how do you you order an Avo Smash on gf toast and a soy chai latte without sounding like a trendy wanker? Apparently you can't...).
|The avo was not glowing... my dodgy iPhone camera and the light made it look radioactive...|
The Avo Smash was my favourite meal in Melbourne. It was fresh and light with lovely simple fresh flavours. The chai came out in a little teapot with honey on the side (I never get offered honey, let alone given it when I order Chai in Perth... what's the story with that?). The milk was light and fluffy and the Chai blend was really delicious.
Would I return?
Hellllll yeaaaaa! It was cool and trendy without being pretentious and wanky. Good simple food and friendly service. I was won over!
